“AI music” is useful shorthand. It is also too blunt to describe the records now arriving under that name.

An AI-generated track may derive its voice, instrumentation and arrangement primarily from a generative system. A person can still write the prompt, supply lyrics, reject dozens of versions and edit the result. Those choices matter, but the system performs much of the audible construction.

AI-assisted music starts somewhere else. A songwriter, singer, producer or band remains responsible for the core performance and composition while using AI for a defined part of the work: separating stems, cleaning audio, testing an arrangement, transforming a voice or extending an existing idea.

The line can blur. That is not an excuse to erase it.

A disclosure should describe where the machine entered the process—not decide whether the song is good.

Not a moral ranking

“Assisted” is not automatically more honest, more soulful or better made. “Generated” does not mean no person cared about the outcome. The terms describe process. Criticism still has to judge melody, writing, performance, arrangement, sound and emotional effect.

That matters because listeners deserve a vocabulary more precise than real or fake. It also matters for artists whose work is flattened by a single badge. A vocalist using an AI restoration tool, a producer building a synthetic singer and a prompt-only release farm are not doing the same job.

What useful transparency looks like

Apple Music’s planned “Made With AI” labels focus on content materially generated by AI, according to a memo reported by Music Business Worldwide. Spotify’s AI Persona badge answers a different question: whether the public-facing artist identity represents a real person. The labels overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

At Silicon Stereo, we will state what is known, avoid pretending that an unknown percentage tells the whole story and keep the judgment separate from the disclosure. The process gives a listener context. The song still has to earn the listen.
