“AI-assisted” should answer one question: did people remain responsible for the record’s primary performance and creative shape?
Under the voluntary labeling proposal announced by a coalition of music organizations in July 2026, an AI-Assisted recording is substantially human-made. Humans perform the lead vocal and primary instruments, while generative AI contributes some expressive elements.
That is distinct from AI-Generated, where generative systems create the entirety or primary portion of the recording’s creative elements. The distinction is more useful than a single AI badge because it describes the scale of the intervention.
A label can identify the category. Only credits can explain the choices.
What it does not tell you
The proposed label applies to the sound recording. It does not currently explain whether AI touched the lyrics, composition, video or cover artwork. It also does not name the system, identify the operator or describe how many generated elements survived into the master.
For Silicon Stereo, the term is a starting point. A useful disclosure should still name the writer, performers, producer, generative system and the specific role it played. Then the listener can return to the question that matters most: does the record work?
