Spotify is drawing a line between an artist’s identity and the tools used to make a song.

Beginning in mid-September, the service says an “AI Persona” badge will appear on selected profiles, in search and beside tracks in playlists. The badge means the identity presented by the artist may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person.

Artists can disclose the status themselves, but Spotify says it will also review profiles that appear to present photorealistic synthetic identities. Those artists will be able to self-disclose or appeal the decision.

The badge identifies the face of the project—not whether a guitar, vocal or lyric involved AI.

Discovery is the bigger story

Spotify says AI Personas will be excluded by default from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless a listener actively follows or saves them. That turns the badge into more than a disclosure label: it changes how synthetic acts can reach an audience.

For information about how a track itself was made, Spotify points listeners toward AI Credits and SongDNA. That distinction is worth preserving. A human musician using a generative tool is not the same thing as a fictional artist presented as a person.
