THE
SIGNAL

Five tiers. Half steps. Plain-English verdicts.

01 / The standard

A score is shorthand.
The review is the argument.

The Signal gives readers an immediate orientation without pretending criticism can be reduced to a decimal. We use half steps only when the distinction is useful—and reserve five Signals for work we believe is essential.

015

Essential

A defining release. The rare record that changes the conversation around it.

024–4.5

Highly Recommended

Excellent work with a clear point of view and lasting replay value.

033–3.5

Worth Hearing

Good to very good. Imperfect, interesting and worthy of your time.

042–2.5

Mixed

Compelling in parts, uneven as a whole, or mainly for committed listeners.

051–1.5

Weak / Avoid

A record whose execution does not support its ideas.

02 / The principles

Music first.

We disclose how a record was made when that information is available. We do not reward novelty, punish a tool or confuse technical polish with artistic success.

No score inflation.

Three Signals means good. Four means excellent. Five remains rare enough to mean something.
